1,268 families helped during Martin Volunteers holiday project

The Martin Volunteers Toys for Tots/White Doves Holiday Project wrapped up its 21st season of caring in December and the final numbers are in.

Distribution of toys and food took place on Dec. 19 in Stuart and Indiantown, and then finished up Dec. 21 in Stuart serving up smiles to 1,268 less fortunate families with 2,541 children in Martin County this holiday season.

This year’s successful holiday project would not have been possible without the community’s support in donating 19,675 toys and 300 volunteers contributing their valuable time.

“Once again, the residents, social service agencies, neighborhoods, gated communities, clubs and businesses came together with an outpouring food, bikes and toys,” Martin Volunteers Director Carol Hodnett said.

“This intergenerational project truly brings the entire community together to address needs during the holidays and is successful because of the many volunteers who work tirelessly to make it a pleasant experience for the less fortunate families.”

One of the things that makes the Toys for Tots/White Doves Holiday Project so special is that it gives parents an opportunity to go shopping for free.

Families are referred primarily by social service agencies and schools. The parents are then invited to make selections for their children from tables filled with toys sorted into age- and gender-appropriate displays. After selecting several gifts per child, they also receive a bag of groceries – the staples for a holiday meal.
