COMMUNICATIONS EXCELLENCE

In 2004, VCRC received two awards for communications excellence. The Volunteer Center Communications Excellence Awards were presented at the National Conference on Community Volunteering and National Service June 6-9, 2004, in Kansas City, Mo. The conference and the awards were sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation and the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The awards program recognizes excellence in volunteer center communication materials and activities. VCRC was the winner in the two categories it entered:

  • Brochures: VCRC’s brochure was judged on effective writing and graphic design as well as clear communication about the volunteer center and its projects.

  • Special events: Entries in this category represented the collective communications activities related to a particular event. In VCRC’s case, this special event was the White Doves Holiday Project. VCRC’s entry included newspaper, radio, TV, online and direct mail information that led up to the White Doves distribution of food and toys on Dec. 19-20, 2003.

Judges looked for a comprehensive and integrated communication effort that brought about results.

DICK SCHWINKENDORF

In 2003, volunteer extraordinaire Dick Schwinkendorf was named one of five local winners of a Jefferson Award Certificate of Excellence for his service to the community. The local awards are sponsored by Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers and WPTV-Channel 5.

Schwinkendorf, who passed away in August 2005, was the warehouse manager of the White Doves Holiday Project for many years. He devoted 50 to 60 hours per week during the three-month duration of the holiday project.

Mr. Schwinkendorf was part of the team that ensures that more than 1,200 needy families receive toys and a holiday meal. He was responsible for the collection, procurement, counting, sorting and distribution of food and toys for the project.

In the summertime, he helped to lead the School Supplies for Students Drive.

On Oct. 16, 2003, Schwinkendorf was among the 50 Points of Light honorees invited to the Governor’s Mansion. In November 2002, he had been a recipient of the Governor’s weekly Points of Light Award for his service as warehouse manager for White Doves.

VOLUNTEER FLORIDA! SUNSHINE AWARD

In 2003, Hobe Sound resident Jim Dudziak was one of the 10 recipients of a Sunshine Award from Volunteer Florida.

The awards, presented Nov. 6, 2003, on the steps of the Old Capitol Building in Tallahassee, coincided with the 10th anniversary of Volunteer Florida (www.volunteerflorida.org).

The awards were given to a volunteer in 10 areas of service: education, emergency management, environment, family volunteers, health care, mentoring, public safety, seniors, youth and virtual volunteering.

Jim Dudziak was the honoree in the category of emergency management.

The United Way Volunteer & Community Resource Center (VCRC) nominated Jim for the numerous hours he has devoted to improving the practices of VCRC's volunteer reception center operations. Dudziak is part of VCRC’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.
