Champion of the Community 2006

JOE MAZZOCHI SR.

United Way of Martin County held its annual Champions of the Community event March 30, 2006, honoring key volunteers, donors, companies and agencies who have made an impact on improving lives in Martin County.

One of the honorees was Joe Mazzochi Sr., owner of Stuart Fine Foods. Mr. Mazzochi received the award from the United Way Volunteer & Community Resource Center (VCRC) for his support of the Good Times raffle as well as many other charitable acts. (VCRC is now known as Martin Volunteers.)

Mr. Mazzochi has donated $2,600 in groceries each year for the past 15 years to serve as the prizes in the Good Times fund-raiser.

The annual raffle supports volunteer projects and services coordinated by VCRC, such as the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, the White Doves Holiday Project, and the School Supplies for Students Drive.

Each year, the two-dollar raffle tickets really add up, and this year they reached a record-setting total, raising more than $7,000.

In past years, the total has ranged from $4,000 to $6,000, reaching nearly $80,000 in raffle ticket sales over 15 years – all in support of volunteers in Martin County.

In addition to his support of VCRC, Mr. Mazzochi is a quiet champion for many nonprofit agencies and school groups around town, sponsoring events and helping people “chip in” to many charities. The familiar Red Chip program contributes $72,000 each from each Stuart Fine Foods store.
