The Volunteer & Community Resource
Center (VCRC) put volunteering in the spotlight for St.
Michael’s Independent School during National Volunteer Week.
VCRC, a program of United Way of Martin
County, helps people of all ages find volunteer roles that
suit their interests, skills and schedules. On April 26,
VCRC brought representatives of six agencies to St.
Michael’s to show the middle- and upper-school students how
they can help out in the community.
Gary Peirce, a teacher who spearheaded
the volunteer fair at St. Michael’s, was impressed by the
enthusiasm of the students and asked that VCRC continue to
present volunteer opportunities at the school.
VCRC will be working with Mr. Peirce to
bring one or two agencies to the school every couple of
months in order to showcase volunteerism for youth, sustain
the students’ interest, and to expand their knowledge of
what various agencies do in the community.
In addition to VCRC, participants in
the volunteer fair April 26 were the Boys & Girls Clubs, Big
Brothers Big Sisters, Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center,
Council on Aging, ARC of Martin County and the YMCA.
VCRC’s many local projects include the
White Doves Holiday Project, the School Supplies for
Students Drive, disaster services, the Florida Volunteer
Administration Certification training course, and the
Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). It also works
with more than 100 nonprofit agencies, schools, libraries,
civic and faith-based organizations countywide, placing and
supporting volunteers.
