United
Way and IRS volunteers
offer free tax help
VOLUNTEER & COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER
PRESS RELEASE DATE: JAN. 23, 2006
United Way of Martin County and the IRS have
established three Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance (VITA) sites to help people file
for the Earned Income Tax Credit.
The VITA sites offer free tax help to
low- to moderate-income ($38,000 and below)
people who cannot prepare their own tax
returns. The IRS-trained volunteers also can
help people file for the Earned Income Tax
Credit if they qualify.
United Way took on the awareness-raising
and volunteer effort after the IRS
determined that about 30 percent of the
people in Martin County who qualify for the
Earned Income Tax Credit have not filed for
it. United Way wants to help people take
advantage of a benefit that could bring them
up to $4,400 in tax refunds.
