White Doves spreads joy Dec. 18-21

PRESS RELEASE DATE: DECEMBER 15, 2006

The White Doves Holiday Project will hold its annual distribution of toys and a holiday meal during the week of Dec. 18.

White Doves will serve more than 1,100 families, which include nearly 3,000 children. These families are referred to White Doves by agencies who know who could use a helping hand.

The “White Doves warehouse” at the Martin County Fairgrounds will handle 817 families over two days. Distribution hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 20 and 10 a.m to 3 p.m. Dec. 21.

In Indiantown, White Doves will serve 296 families from 9 a.m. to noon on Dec. 18 at Hope Rural School.

On distribution days, families get to “shop for free” and choose two to four toys per child, depending on the amount of toys donated in particular age and gender categories. Families also receive the staples for a holiday meal, as well as a turkey or ham.

In addition to the number of families served through the Stuart and Indiantown distributions, nearly 200 families are “adopted” each year by generous individuals, families, neighborhoods, businesses and school groups.

ABOUT WHITE DOVES

The White Doves Holiday Project serves as a central clearinghouse for donated food and toys at holiday time. The massive undertaking is a project of Martin Volunteers and pools the resources of dozens of volunteers, community groups, agencies, families, businesses and faith-based and civic organizations.

Martin Volunteers, formerly known as the Volunteer & Community Resource Center (VCRC), is a program of United Way of Martin County.

Most of the nonperishable food comes from the Boy Scouts’ Scouting for Food drive, which was held Nov. 11 and brought in 17,000 pounds of food. Thousands of toys are donated at Toys for Tots collection points throughout the county. White Doves is the local coordinating organization for the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots drive in Martin County.

Donations of food, toys, holiday decorations and money can be dropped off at the White Doves warehouse, Building B at the Martin County Fairgrounds, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, Nov. 27 through Dec. 19.

Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation may send it to White Doves Holiday Project, PO Box 362, Stuart, FL 34995.
