Volunteer managers achieve certification

PRESS RELEASE DATE: Oct. 19, 2007

Participants in the fifth graduating class of the Florida Volunteer Administration Certification program have new credentials to enhance their leadership of volunteers at Treasure Coast nonprofits.

The certification is coordinated by Martin Volunteers, a program of United Way of Martin County.

On Oct. 16, Martin Volunteers presented certificates of accomplishment to the 10 managers of volunteers who completed the program. The graduates are as follows:

  • Susan Getlik, case manager, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Martin County.

  • Amy Price, case manager, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Martin County.

  • Patricia Kinahan, program director, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Martin County.

  • Cathy Knowles, nutrition coordinator, Senior Resource Association.

  • Valerie Flanagan, RSVP director, Senior Resource Association.

  • Donna Clements, volunteer coordinator, Hibiscus Children's Center.

  • Carlene Stangle, volunteer coordinator, Martin Volunteers.

  • Bill Condon, disaster specialist, American Red Cross.

  • Lynn Flynn, volunteer coordinator, Tykes & Teens.

  • Peggy Decina, volunteer, Sunrise Theater.

These managers of volunteers went through a six-part training program that is designed to help nonprofit organizations increase the effectiveness of their volunteer programs.

“Because volunteers are so important to agencies being able to carry out their mission, it is vital that the people who manage volunteers are well-trained,” said Martin Volunteers director Carol Hodnett.

The curriculum, developed by the Points of Light Foundation, includes lessons on program management, planning, volunteer recruitment and placement, training and supervision of volunteers, and program evaluation. The training course was led by Martin Volunteers’ associate director, Dianne Young, who has extensive experience in adult education, training and administration.

The next round of training will be in the first quarter of 2008 under a new name – the Florida Volunteer Management Certificate Program.
