Martin Volunteers’ seventh
annual School Supplies for
Students Drive has made going
back to school a little easier
for nearly 7,000 Martin County
students.
Responding to a need in the
community, the School Supplies
Drive serves about one-third of
the students in Martin County –
those who are eligible for the
free and reduced-price lunch
program. This year, the project
served 6,817 students in
kindergarten through 12th grade.
The project is coordinated by
Martin Volunteers, a program of
United Way of Martin County.
Several sponsors helped boost
the drive, including All Jetting
Technologies, BankAtlantic
Foundation, C&W Computers, Cash
Plus, Forest Hills Funeral Home,
Riverside Bank and VFW Treasure
Coast Men’s Auxiliary.
The
primary collection sites once
again were at the Martin County
libraries, with additional
collections or drives being
conducted by Cash Plus, Stuart;
Coconut Republic Parrot Head
Club; Edward Jones, Palm City;
Forest Hills Funeral Home, Palm
City; Frozen Ropes, Stuart;
Martin County Property
Appraiser's Office; Martin
County Tax Collector’s Office;
Mobil On The Run, Jensen Beach;
Montego Cove Condominium; Palm
Cove; Realtor Association of
Martin County;
Riverside National Bank
branches; Salerno Diner; and The
Stuart News.
For
the second straight year, Pratt
& Whitney held a pencil drive to
support the cause, delivering
32,566 pencils.
This
year, volunteers were able to
sort the supplies in the
cafeteria at Stuart Middle
School rather than in the heat
of the Martin County
Fairgrounds. “We are deeply
grateful to principal Sigrid
George for offering us the use
of the cafeteria,” project
coordinator Anne Lalley said.
Ms.
Lalley led a group of volunteers
who boxed up all the requests
from schools for items that also
included pens,
pencil boxes, glue, binders,
two-pocket folders, crayons,
colored pencils, markers,
scissors, rulers, erasers,
notebook paper, subject
notebooks and composition books.
