For the second straight
year, Jensen Beach High School has earned
the Holiday Spirit Challenge trophy for its
toy drive to the White Doves Holiday
Project.
The trophy was
presented to Jensen Beach principal Ginger
Featherstone and two Student Government
Association representatives, Heather Babione
and Laura Holling, during the United Way of
Martin County’s board meeting Jan. 17. White
Doves is organized by Martin Volunteers, a
United Way program.
“We established Holiday
Spirit Challenge to encourage a new
generation to get involved with White Doves
and to promote a healthy competition among
the three Martin County public high
schools,” said Lisa Haley, the co-chair of
the White Doves Holiday Project along with
her husband, Tom.
Jensen Beach collected
the most toys per student at the school,
giving the traveling trophy a home at Jensen
Beach High School for the second year in the
Challenge’s two-year history.
In addition to the toy
drive, Jensen Beach football players,
cheerleaders and other students volunteered
during the distribution days for White
Doves. They helped hundreds of families
select and load the donated toys and food at
the Martin County Fairgrounds on Dec. 20-21,
2006.
White Doves serves as a
central clearinghouse of donated food and
toys during the holiday season. Families are
referred to White Doves by social service
agencies, schools and faith-based groups.
They receive groceries, a ham or turkey, and
toys for their children.
Overall, White Doves
served 1,206 families with 3,087 children
this past season.
