ABOUT MARTIN COUNTY’S SCHOOL
SUPPLIES FOR STUDENTS DRIVE
Each
year, Martin Volunteers -- a
program of United Way of Martin
County – organizes the School
Supplies for Students Drive for
children in preschool through 12th
grade in Martin County.
Even
as the current school year winds
down, Martin Volunteers is
gearing up for its eighth annual
drive. Project coordinator Anne
Lalley soon will send forms to
educators seeking the estimated
number of eligible students –
those on the free and
reduced-price lunch program –
and the quantities of various
school supplies they will need
to start the next school year.
“The
School Supplies for Students
Drive responds to a strong need
in the community and seeks to
make the start of the school
year a little easier for
thousands of students,” Ms.
Lalley said.
Last
year, the drive collected and
distributed nearly 51,000 items
for 7,000 students.
Sponsors and supporters like the
Treasure Coast Veterans
Auxiliary, the BankAtlantic
Foundation and Publix Super
Markets Charities Inc. help
Martin Volunteers purchase the
supplies, which include items
such as pens,
pencils, binders, folders,
crayons, colored pencils,
markers, scissors, rulers, paper
and composition books. The
signature “little red
schoolhouses” will be placed in
Martin County libraries and
businesses throughout July as
collection points for
individuals to donate supplies.
